Defenders of the Sheep

… for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. (Romans 13:4)

Defenders of the Sheep is a faith-based training program designed to educate, develop, and prepare individuals to recognize suspicious behavior, mitigate potential threats, and respond to emergencies to create a secure atmosphere conducive for worship.

Defenders of the Sheep develops situational awareness in our clients through practical teachings that train them to identify, respond to, and address incidents with grace and discretion.

Defenders of the Sheep believes it is imperative to effectively plan and essential to remain prepared before incidents arise so that our clients are confident in their ability to protect and they stand ready to act!

Why is Defenders of the Sheep necessary?

Places of worship are the cornerstone of society; however, much like schools, they are considered “soft targets” or easily accessible by those who intend to inflict pain through fear and violence. As a result, statistics indicate we are experiencing an increase in criminal activities and deliberate attacks on houses of worship, both nationally and internationally.

With this new reality, it is naive and potentially neglectful to continue to operate with a  mindset that church security is not a necessity because we have God as our protector. This perspective is an indication of why churches are becoming the primary targets for domestic terrorism and why we are often reactive and unprepared to respond when tragedies occur.

If God’s people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge, are we not continuing on a vulnerable path when we fail to identify the urgent need to protect ourselves?

The Sheepdog Paradigm

We believe that an understanding of the Sheepdog paradigm and its correlation to the church will help you to arrive at the conclusion that God expects us to do better.

Not only does Jesus warn the disciples that He is sending them as sheep in the midst of wolves, but He also tells those who don’t have a sword to purchase one. Luke 22:36 We believe it was the intent of Jesus to establish in the minds of believers the necessity of using common sense for provision and protection. Why would He encourage them to buy swords if it was His intention to always be there as their physical protector?

The Sheep

Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. (Psalms 100:3)

Jesus sent us out as sheep knowing that we would soon encounter and even have to defend ourselves as well as our loved ones from the wolves of this world.

Would you have ever thought the day would come when we would need to strategically plan to prevent the wolves from intruding and attacking the very places we worship? Nevertheless, here we are.

Sheep are the soft-hearted, upright, elegant, and meek members of the flock conditioned to follow their Shepherd. They are content to exist in a predictable and routine atmosphere.

As they live day in and day out, they cannot envision anything disrupting their peace or routine;  and they imagine that each day will proceed like the last.

The Wolves

I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock … (Acts 20:29)

Wolves are the enemy of the sheep. They exist in the shadows, outside the perimeter of safety surrounding the sheep. Wolves are the sociopaths who commit violent crimes, or ignore moral or ethical boundaries with impunity.

They take advantage of the sheep’s tendency to be inexperienced with evil, unprepared for attack, and caught flat-footed when a crisis arises. The wolves in the world are prone to attack the elderly, weak, wounded and young.

The Sheepdogs

Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? If the Lord had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. (Psalm 94:16, 17)

Although sheepdogs dwell among the flock as one of them, they are distinctively different and set apart. They protect the perimeter and vigilantly watch for those “wolves” who would attempt to do evil to the sheep.

Their presence alone may not deter every attack; however, when wolves sense that a sheepdog will protect the sheep at all cost, they are more likely to seek out the flock who are not protected.

Unlike sheep and wolves, being a sheepdog is not a matter of birth; it is a choice – a matter of resolve coupled with mental and physical training. In order to become a sheepdog, one must consciously decide to do so through prayer and supplication; and then seek out training on how to perfect the gift through serving your church.
